DEEP AEROBICS/Death Electric Emo Protest Aerobics is dead
Long live DEEP AEROBICS!
2007-2017

DEEP AEROBICS was originally created in 2007 at American Dance Festival as an improvisational experiment to see if I could excavate the true stupidity of aerobics and imbue it with fun, politics and queerness. I did it on the fly for several years and then eventually made it fancier (lights, video) when I was invited to do it as part Platform 2011: Body Madness - Absurdity & Wit, curated by Judy Hussie-Taylor at Danspace Project at St. Marks Church. It grew to be something that I did in many places throughout the U.S., Europe and Canada. The Knife used the first couple of tracks as the public warmup for their Shaking The Habitual tour in 2013/14. I loved doing DEEP for many years and it was an incredible and beautiful experience. But I never intended to do it forever. It eventually became clear to me that I could no longer sustain the level of mania, physically or psychically, that it requires to lead DEEP. Also, post the 2016 U.S. presidential election, I needed other ways to speak to the political condition of our time. So I spent 2017 doing a KILL DEEP AEROBICS tour in several places and eventually brought my baby home to rest.

DEEP AEROBICS= Death Electric Emo Protest Aerobics - is a workout form invented and shamelessly disseminated by Miguel Gutierrez, who hopes to soon destroy the technique, because it’s just too hard to teach, and really the world is going to hell in a hand basket anyway. It is one hour plus of the communal/political/conceptual/imaginational workout experience you always wanted but never could embarrass yourself enough to find or do in public. It is for anyone who has ever had any interest in combining the joie de vivre that is the vigorous bouncing of one’s anatomical/spiritual/energetic molecules with the existential absurdity that is living in a world/country/economic system of injustice, war-mongering, and cultural ineptitude. Oh wait, that’s you. Come in a costume of your own devising, whatever that means to you. Taste the sweat.

p.s. Take one class and you are instantly a certified master teacher of the form. No yearly dues, fees, reports. Just give me credit.
