dAMNATION rOAD premiered at The Kitchen, New York City in January 2004.
What does it mean to create dance in a world that is continually in the process of dying?
We are surrounded by reports of "terror," both real and imagined.
What is it that we are supposed to be so afraid of?
That we will vanish? That our bodies will be revealed as the fragile containers that they are?
That we are vulnerable?
dAMNATION
rOAD is a physical and aural exploration of the body in terror. The central
figure is blindfolded and bound, and as a result has an experience that is almost
exclusively internal. She attempts to act in the face of paralysis, and her
uncertain gestures and groping reflect our own desire to understand the unknown.
Christoph Draeger's set is a site of destruction--the metallic rubble of a destroyed
supermarket, a car wrech and a dilapidated bedroom. The cluttered stage creates
limitations for movement, engendering feelings of isolation and fear. The performance
is heightened by Pee in My Face with Sugery's caustic music, which shrieks and
bellows with surface tension and inner density. dAMNATION rOAD embodies the
clarity of Fritz Welch's final scream:
I
AM
NOT
DEAD
